Black Cat Appreciation Day

August 17th is Black Cat Appreciation Day! While we love and appreciate all of our feline buddies, we’re more than happy to give black kitties a little extra attention. These cats are just as sweet and lovable as any other feline, but they’ve gotten a bit of a bad rap. A Dallas, GA vet discusses black cats below.

Benefits of Having A Black Cat

If you’re considering adopting a kitty, please don’t overlook black ones. There are usually at least a few in every shelter. That’s because black cats often take much longer to get adopted out, in part because of old wives’ tales and superstitions. This is really quite sad, as these cute furballs are just as lovable and personable as any other cat.

Misconceptions

Black cats have long been associated with bad luck here in the U.S. However, Fluffy hasn’t always had such a bad reputation. In some places, black cats have been considered lucky. For instance, in England, new brides were often gifted black cats, as they were thought to bring happiness and prosperity. (We can’t vouch for the prosperity part, but we definitely agree on the happiness bit!)

Fun Facts

Did you know that there are 22 breeds of cat that are officially allowed to be black? Out of those, only one—the charming Bombay—is always black. Actually, none of these cats are technically black. If you look at Fluffy’s fur when she is lounging in the sun, you’ll notice that she’s actually a very dark brown. Her fur may lighten up, and even show patterns, if she spends a lot of time sunbathing.

Keeping Kitty Safe

Unfortunately, black cats have a higher risk of being hurt or stolen than other kitties. We recommend keeping Fluffy inside all the time. However, this is particularly important around Halloween. Your tiny void should also be microchipped and wearing proper ID tags.

Appreciating Fluffy

Do you have a black cat? Be sure to show your feline buddy some extra attention. Just like any other kitty, black cats love toys and treats. Catnip may also get that little motor going. Of course, cats don’t necessarily have expensive tastes. A plain grocery bag or cardboard box will also please your feline overlord.
