April 30th is Adopt A Shelter Cat Day. If you’re ready to adopt a new furry friend, please consider giving a shelter cat a loving home. There are far too many sad, sweet kitties stuck in shelters. These adorable furballs just want someone to adopt them and give them love, attention, and lap space. If you are planning to adopt a shelter kitty, you have our support! A local Dallas, GA vet offers some tips on preparing for Fluffy below.
Kittyproofing
Never underestimate a kitty’s ability to get into mischief. Take a bit of time to make your home safe for your new feline friend. Some things you’ll want to remove or secure include toxic plants, wires and cords, medicine, chemicals, plastic bags and ties, and anything small or sharp. Your vet can give you more information on this.
Shopping
You’ll need to make a trip to the pet store. Fluffy will need all of the basic kitty necessities, such as food, dishes, a litterbox and litter, a carrier, and a comfy bed. Toys are also a must. Cats all have their own tastes here, so get a few different things, and see what your new pet likes best. We also recommend getting at least one comfy bed and a scratching post or board. Things like pet tents and cat towers aren’t absolutely necessary, but they are beneficial.
Setup
Kitties can take some time to settle in to their new homes. You may want to put Fluffy’s things in a quiet area, such as a laundry room or spare room. This is especially important if you have other pets. Ask your vet for advice on making introductions.
Veterinary Appointment
One of the first things you’ll want to do is set up an appointment with your vet. This doesn’t need to happen on Day One, but you should bring Fluffy in within a week or so for a full exam. Most shelter cats are already fixed, but if your new pet is a kitten, she may still need this done. We strongly recommend microchipping as well. Your furball will also need parasite control and any recommended vaccinations. While you’re there, don’t be shy about asking for specific care tips.
